History

There are over 70 films that have gone through their development stage at BrLab and that have been screened and awarded at major festivals around the world and distributed in different territories.

In our last survey, we identified 62 films that were finalized and released and another 28 that are currently either in the final stages of completion or in an advanced stage of funding. This allows us to estimate that 90 BrLab films will have been produced by 2025-26.

In 2025, the Chilean film La Misteriosa Mirada del Flamenco (BrLab Features 2019), by Diego Céspedes, was selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival, and the film A Natureza das Coisas Invisíveis(BrLab Features 2020), directed by Rafaela Camelo, participated in the Berlinale and in the 49th São Paulo International Film Festival, where it won two awards: The Critics’ Award for Best Brazilian Film and the Prisma Queer Award for Best Brazilian Film.

The Argentine film Hijo Mayor (BrLab Features 2018), directed by Cecilia Kang, also received the Best Emerging Director award in the Cineastas del Presente section of the Locarno Festival in 2025.

The film Criadas, written and directed by Carol Rodrigues, was selected for the Premiere Brasil – New Paths section at Festival do Rio, and won the Audience Award for Best Brazilian Fiction Film at the 49th São Paulo International Film Festival.

The film A Hera (BrLab Features 2018), by Ana Cristina Barragán, was screened at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival and was part of the competition in the Orizzonti section, dedicated to new vanguards and aesthetics in cinema, where it won the award for Best Screenplay.

In the same festival and section, the Mexican director David Pablos, who participated in the first edition of BrLab with his film project La Vida Después, received the Best Film award with En El Camino.

The film Praia Formosa (BrLab Features 2016), directed by Julia De Simone, had its world premiere at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2024, and the film La Piel en Primavera BrLab Features 2017), by Yennifer Uribe Alzate, premiered in the Berlinale in the same year.
